Have I mentioned the kids are great? They're awesome; at least the 3 kids I'm staying with are. They're independent, responsible and well behaved. I woke up to the request of kuih kodoks and I went 'but there are no more bananas...' 'Go to the store!' Because everytime the family don't have something, someone will run to the store to get some. And the stores are not far. There's K Extra, a small grocery shop of K City Market, which is a hypermarket, and then there's Lidl, another small grocery store which I've not been to yet, and Prisma, another hypermarket that has Hesburger. And all these stores are like less than 2km from each other. Life is pretty convenient here.
So I had to go get some bananas and Helmi decided to follow me to the store, while the boys went over to their friends' houses. She got dressed, changed her pants to something warmer, put on her jacket, her shoes, and her helmet, all by herself. She even carried a sling bag containing her purse and other necessary stuff. And then shouted to me from downstairs, 'I'm ready!' while I was not =(
Helmi wanted to go to Pet Point to get some stuff for Pupsi first, before going into K Extra, which was right next door. She's really a good companion as she talks to you almost non-stop. And it's so cute to see her trying to express herself in her limited vocab of English. Her pronunciation is good and her sentence forming is above average a kid her age, in my opinion. It's only her vocab that's lacking. She says a lot of 'I dunno...', 'you know...' 'like...mhmm...like...you knowww....'.
Me: What does this word means, Helmi?
Helmi: Erm, it's like, mhmm, like, mhmm, *smiles* you know...
Me: I don't... :P
Helmi: *giggles*
She went into the store, greeted the shopkeeper, went to the rabbit's corner, picked out what she wanted, looked around, I waved an item to her as a suggestion, she looked and said 'I dunno...', she looked around some more, I asked what else do you need, she mumbled, 'I dunno...', looked around, picked another item while saying 'this one!', and eventually went up to the cashier to pay - with her own money. It was like she knew that these were her own things and she had to pay on her own. I was just watching from behind the whole time. The cashier lady even said she's her favourite customer. Aww...
Then we went to buy bananas next door. I picked the bananas and put them into a bag. Here, you have to weigh your fruits and vegetables yourself by keying in the code number displayed. She checked the code for me, took the bananas and weigh them on the scale, took the price sticker and stuck it on the bag. And then I decided to get more bananas. Then she pointed at the price tag and said, 'You can get another this and put it here!' So cute and smart! ♥
When checking out, she asked me, 'Do you have, uh, Finland money?' Haha! Yes, I have =)
The total was 15.60€, I gave the lady a 20€ note. Helmi whispered to me while fixing her eyes on the cashier lady, 'You get money back!' Haha! Okay =)
Back home, I gave her 3 funky pencils I got as souvenirs back in Thinkscape, but she picked only one, knowing she'd want at least 2 out of the 3. Really, I haven't seen such unselfish kid before. Either that, or I've lost touch with kids this generation. Tell me if this kid is rare.
Made kuih kodoks again and banana cake. For some reason, the kids seem to love banana desserts. All 3 of them loved the kuih kodoks and the cake.
